The Mission Continues
This Veterans Day, The Mission Continues proudly honors those who have served our country, and we salute those who continue their service as citizen leaders here at home. Today, through The Mission Continues, our veterans will lead dozens of service projects involving thousands of their fellow citizens at homeless shelters, food banks, parks, and elementary schools around the country.
Through their military service, our nation’s veterans build courage, discipline, and the leadership we need in our communities every day. Despite the visible and invisible scars that some may carry, research has shown that veterans can overcome challenges in their own lives, and rebuild their own sense of purpose, through continued service here at home.
Josh Eckhoff was on a route-clearing mission near Baghdad in February 2008 when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). He endured a traumatic brain injury that paralyzed the left side of his body. After 13 months of intensive therapy, Josh was not only able to walk again, he was also ready to serve again. Today, he is completing a Mission Continues Fellowship at the St. Louis Science Center, working towards achieving his goal of becoming a high school teacher.
“Now that I cannot ensure the future of our nation by defending it, my aim is to ensure that future generations are educated enough to make smart decisions to sustain the greatness of this nation,” said Josh.
Today, join me in thanking all our veterans for their military service, and in challenging them to serve again as citizen leaders here at home. As a nation, we need their strength, their service, and their leadership. If we all help them to continue their missions of service, then this generation can be the next Greatest Generation.
Yours in service,
Eric Greitens
